Meals on Wheels a ‘necessary’ program for nation’s seniors

As a disabled person, I am scared. I know a lot of senior folks receiving Meals on Wheels. Thankfully, I can cook for myself. The question is what will the recipients do if this program is cut? The article said that it cost more to place a senior in a nursing home just because they couldn’t cook for themselves. I don’t see much savings in that.

How these cuts affect me….

I have to get housing assistance because the rent at my current location got too expensive. With no job and mounting expenses, sacrifices have to be made.  I have to move in August and still don’t have my voucher. When I renewed my application, the lady informed me that they had not gotten their funding. Thanks to Trump’s budget cuts, this might not be till January 2018.

While some places offer rent based on income, It is better on Section 8. Trump’s realization has not caught up to how these cuts affect people. Meals on Wheels is one of the necessary programs, nor wasteful.

I also found out that the local medical bus that took me to my doctor’s appointments last year will cease operation May 31. This was another one of those programs that Trump thought ‘wasteful’. It will probably go to an ‘as needed’ basis. I pray that this requirement can be met by me.

Meals on Wheels got 35 percent of its funding through state subsidies. It was not on the budget cut list.

I am not on Medicaid, but I heard Mac Thornberry’s Town Hall meeting on The American Health Care Act, which was supposed to replace Obama Care and didn’t because it failed. I probably won’t get the written letter I was promised either. I am still waiting. There were a lot of questions about Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security and Veterans benefits. Obama Care took a big chunk of Medicare funds to run their program. When they refused to expand the Medicaid funding with this program, it hurt a lot of people. My Medicare premium went from $63.20 to $79.80 a month.

Trump’s realization is that he sees the need for the programs about to undergo severe
budget cuts. However, it did not mean that he is to protect the recipients of Meals on Wheels or
the other programs. Meals on Wheels got 35% of its funding from the government. It might get
hit indirectly though. The Trump administration planned to slash 18% of the Health and Human
Services for his defense spending.

Now, this man wants to use funds from the money El Chapo stole to fund the wall separating the U.S. and Mexico. Someone told me he should be paying from his own pocket. He sure has a lot of nerve. That i’ll give him.

At least with Hillary Clinton in charge, things would be different. She would have left the situation with North Korea alone. She would have let Putin disgrace himself instead of the current ‘cold war’ stance that exists now.

India is upset because the travel ban kept them from getting visas to work on America’s tech line. China, Russia, and North Korea are allies. Trump’s realization is that all three have ruffled feathers because of him, but he doesn’t care. He still has diplomacy issues.

What a difference 100 days makes.

Moriah Modisette: Banning cell use while driving is needed

Well, here’s a good reason for banning  cell phones  while driving is needed. It appears, in a January 5 article, that an SUV crashed into the back of another car eat full speed, which killed a five year old girl. The driver that rammed into the one in front, used Facetime while they drove.

According to a BBC article, the accident happened on a Texas road on Christmas Eve 2014. Five-year-old Moriah Modisette subsequently died. The lawsuit states that the parents – James and Bethany Modisette – were seeking damages for “the defendant’s wrongful failure to install and implement the safer, alternative design for which it sought a patent in December 2008”

The patent, which was issued by the US patent office in April 2014 aimed to lock out users while they were driving. In spite of repeated requests, there has been no statement made by Apple iPhone makers.

The driver involved in the crash – Garrett Wilhelm – drove his SUV into the back of the Modisette family’s vehicle while travelling at high speeds. Also in the BBC article, lawsuit documents said that he told police he was using FaceTime at the time of the crash and that the application was still active when police found his phone at the scene. He is facing trial on manslaughter charges in February.

There is a reason why this lawsuit isn’t frivolous. In 2008, iPhones supposedly had a feature that kept the phone from being used when the user got behind the wheel. In the United States, 46 states, including: Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands ban text messaging for all drivers. All but 5 have primary enforcement. Of the 4 states without an all driver texting ban: 2 prohibit text messaging by novice drivers. Approximately 20 or more states and three U.S. Territories banned the use of hand held devices while driving

Wichita Falls did not allow the use of cell phones in school zones. Texas is one of the states resisting a stated wide prohibition of cell use while driving.

Possible cancer link discovered in palm oil

Nutella’s cancer link to palm oil unfounded by report

Nutella, the popular chocolate, nutty spread, now has links to cancer thanks to palm oil. Before anyone panics, here is the information found by this blogger. Most of the problem with this spread and the cancer concern has to do with children, aged 3 and under. This blogger might think that the report is unfounded.

While processed foods aren’t good for anyone, this group has underdeveloped immune systems. Most of the trouble came from refining foods at high tempertures, usually above 200 degrees Celcius, which causes these free radicals to exist in foods like margarine and other oils. One of the problems with this eight month old report is that the powers that be didn’t set a safe level of the cancer causing agent that had everyone so afraid. That didn’t stop one of the largest food chains in Italy from pulling the spread from it’s shelves. Acccording to the article from The Huffington Post, more research is needed to determine how bad the cancer threat really is.

Nutella posted a tweet on the safety of its product and further went on defending its consumption. It went on further, stating:

“Making Nutella without palm oil would produce an inferior substitute for the real product, it would be a step backward,” Vincenzo Tapella from Ferrero told Reuters.

This link to cancer that has everybody up in arms, is inconclusive because the report that is being used to back up these cancer claims never mentioned the name brand as a culprit of it. If more research is needed on the subject, why are they using this old report to stir up controversy in the first place?

The biggest problem over the production of this highly prized palm oil is that poor countries in where the rain forest existed, large corporations are being lured into mass producing these trees for economic reasons, often at the expense of endangered aninimals and their habitats. A lot of people that live in the forest are being displaced in favor of the money these large farms can produce from growing and harvesting these trees. It reminded me of what the settlers did to gain land from the Indians. Remember The Trail of Tears?

In spite of this scare tactic from the media, no plans are in the works in the United Kingdom to stop sales of Nutrlla. The World Health Organizatio hasn’t warned people to cease consumption of palm oil. There are efforts to stop the massive distruction of the forests by producing synthetic palm oil, but even that is full o controversy too.

Will the new administration get Obamacare right with the March 3 deadline?

The fate of Obamacare delayed until March 3

It looked to me like the life of ObamaCare, otherwise known as The Affordable Care Act, is extended, at least until March 3. This allowed the in coming administration to get it right, thanks to the five senators that drafted and passed an amendment to the bill on Monday night. The January 27 deadline would’ve used money from the budget reconciliation to void parts of the controversial act.

SENATE VOTES OVERNIGHT IN FIRST STEP TOWARD REPEAL OF OBAMACARE

Having something new and more responsible is the incoming administration’s major hurdles and first on their agenda. How is this done without a huge hike in costs? According to one article, the ACA costs money, $1.34 trillion in the next 10 years. As this already added to the national defict, already reaching $19.8 trillion, taxpayers are alarmed this mandate further excentuated unneccessary, waistful spending. Nearly 20 million people will lose medical coverage if Obamacare is undone.

Speaking of the affect on the national deficit, a few estimates suggest that the ACA could have a positive long-term effect on the deficit; others disagree. saying that the new law will only add more weight to an already devastating national debt. Affordable healthcare comes at a cost to taxpayers who can afford to contribute to the system. And some taxpayers will pay substantially more than others depending on their health. age and socioeconomic status.

The Affordable Care Act requires a variety of things:1) Everyone must obtain insurance 2), policies have to offer “10 essential benefits. and 3) certain employers have to provide health insurance to full-time workers. These requirements might be seen as a slap in the face to personal freedom. Whether you agree with this assessment or not, conservatives back this mandate 100% and continue arguing the point, despite the fact that the bill is a law.

Republicans have it reversed. Government wasn’t the problem, it was the solution. The problem existed in the private sector. At least 20% won’t have a choice in providers in 2017. Those in the middle faced an average premium increase of 25%. Still the majority of people were taking a tax penalty because the premiums remain out of reach.

Donald Trump Warns Obamacare Taxes & Penalties 2016 – YouTube

Remember the problem with Bowie Memorial Hospital? It closed because of funding problems. Bowie citizens went to the polls in Montague County deciding whether to approve a hospital tax district, which would have pumped much-needed revenue into the hospital. Run by a volunteer board, appointed by  Bowie City Council members, Bowie Memorial bled millions over the years as administrators struggled to serve an aging, poor and underinsured population. But anti-tax forces in the community saw the district as another government bailout; some didn’t even believe the hospital would close.

With the influx of young people to bigger cities in search of jobs, the elderly and poor were left behind. This made things worse when Congress slashed funding and repayment costs for Medicaid and Medicare in the 1990s. The worst part of it is they didn’t expand services for Medicaid under the ACA, which left most uninsured who didn’t qualify for Medicaid and didn’t have Medicare. Nearly 80% of hospital patients were like that and very sick a lot on the time. It was sad to see this unfold last year on the news.

There has been local good news. Thanks to the ACA, there are urgent care centers and Emergency Clinics. Urgent care centers handle things that were handled in the next two days and up to a week. Emergency Clinics handle immediate problems like appendicitis, any type of stomach pains and the like. For a kidney infection, urgent care would run the testing aand diagnose the condition via their lab. For a migraine The Emergency Clinic is the option. The aim with all these options is to reduce the high copay costs of visiting an ER.

The cost of treating my migraine at URHCC ER back in January 2008 was $2,678, roughly. The cost for the ER doctor was over $300, separate from the treatment. This included three anti- nausea medication administered through an IV and my being hooked up to a heart machine, a blood test taken twice, and medicine to stop the pain. The medication for the migraine cost $285 before Medicare, $211 after. The large amount made my doctor cringe.

Medicare Part D Penalty

To leave Medicare Part D isn’t wise either. Not having prescription drug coverage cost someone 2.5% of their income plus a lifetime penalty that started at $ 4 a month. Because there isn’t any other income outside of my Social Security check and what my father left from the VA, the money probably will be deducted from my check before it is electronically deposited into my account. Not having part B costs more than that. As of April 15, 2017, the penalty started at $900. Penalties were like premiums. They went up too. Had I switched to the standard plan instead of going with another company, or sttaying with the value plan there probably wouldn’t be a premium increase of $17.

My point here is, in the rush to get out of the program, the representative on the phone December 7 mislead me into believing disenrollment in Medicare Part D could’ve been handled over the phone and there weren’t any consequences.  She may have started with them, but there wasn’t a full disclosure until my call on December 30.

So, as congress and the senate decide the fate of Obamacare, the effects could either hurt its users or help. Let’s pray they get it right by March 3 of this year.

Chrohn's Disease break through

Science finds break through for Crohn’s Disease sufferers

Science is closing in on Crohn’s Disease, a debilitating inflammatory bowel disease, which causes severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, and fatigue. Part of the equation is the fugus recently found in the gut. The other part, found this week, were two bacteria that played a major role in how the person developed the disease.

My mother suffers from a form of Chrohn’s Disease, called Ileitis,, formerly Regional Ileitis. This affects primarily the small and large intestines, but which can occur anywhere in the digestive system between the mouth and the anus. In her case, it affected the stomach. Certain things in her diet cause blockage in the small intestines that cause pain, diarrhea, and nausea.

The list of hazzard foods get longer every year. Things like broccoli, cabbage, stuffing, apple, grape skins, orange juice pulp, etc.

“Essentially, patients with Crohn’s have abnormal immune responses to these bacteria, which inhabit the intestines of all people. While most researchers focus their investigations on these bacteria, few have examined the role of fungi, which are also present in everyone’s intestines. Our study adds significant new information to understanding why some people develop Crohn’s disease. Equally important, it can result in a new generation of treatments, including medications and probiotics, which hold the potential for making qualitative and quantitative differences in the lives of people suffering from Crohn’s.”

In the past, studies found that E coli bacteria had been a major factor in Crohn’s sufferers. Now there were two more, Serratia marcescens and the fungus Candida tropicalis, are contributors to this disease too. The main factors that cause this disease are genetic along the lines of environment and one’s diet. As long as the probiotic did not have yogurt, the active cultures irritated her Crohn’s Disease, she wouldn’t get sick.

My mother lost so much weight during one of her attack that she fit into clothes she wore before marrying my father. She couldn’t wear her wedding ring because it wouldn’t stay on her finger.

The researchers found strong fungal-bacterial interactions in those with Crohn’s disease: two bacteria (Escherichia coli and Serratia marcescens) and one fungus (Candida tropicalis) moved in lock step. The presence of all three in the sick family members was significantly higher compared to their healthy relatives, suggesting that the bacteria and fungus interact in the intestines. Additionally, test-tube research by the Ghannoum-led team found that the three work together (with the E. coli cells fusing to the fungal cells and S. marcescens forming a bridge connecting the microbes) to produce a biofuel — a thin, slimy layer of microorganisms found in the body that adheres to, among other sites, a portion of the intestines — which can prompt inflammation that results in the symptoms of Crohn’s disease.

This is good because it is the first time a fungus and bacteria are linked to Crohn’s Disease. Of course, with the studies, the stomachs of the relatives in the Crohn’s Disease family are different from the ones that are disease free family. A good indication that there is trouble in the gut is when the doctor recommends a soy formula other than regular formula for their baby. A writer friend had a son with Crohn’s and she told me that.

Thankfully, this condition is not hereditary. Mom had a blood transfusion at 18. It made me feel better that treatment is improving for Crohn’s sufferers. Maybe someday, there will be a cure.

Alzheimer’s treatments look promising

The breakthroughs in fighting the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease are great this week. First, CBN News reported on the 36 factors affecting Alzheimers Disease. Then, a report today on CNN stated that a new drug destroying plaque on the brain of those in the early stage might change the outcome of those affected. While this is too late for the late Gene Wilder, these two breakthroughs looked promising for those in the earliest stages.

According to the CBN report, the debilitating disease is reversible, even avoidable if the current study produces actual results based on 36 factors. These factors must be researched in order to get to the root of the problem to find a cause. Things like diet and lifestyle are considered. Wouldn’t it be something if they found out the cause is due to sleep deprivation or eating too much processed sugar?

The beauty of discovering the cause is, that the person affected can change his lifestyle and or diet as needed to reverse the process. Right now, the developed drugs only worked on the symptoms. It seemed to me that a lot of the studies are hitting the rim, but missing the basket. The report read by me last month was scary because the writer, a doctor, sounded gloomy, almost apocalyptic when anyone got a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. Well now, there’s more that just a ‘faint chance’. The light just got brighter with these two findings.

Everyone knew the effects of a poor diet had on the brain, especially excessive intake of sugar. Among other things, like diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, sugar played a major role in the development of Alzheimer’s Disease. More than half of the population in the U.S were resistant to insulin. This made them carry extra weight around the middle. According to some of the infomercials seen on late night television, this was a major reaso why losing weight was a problem or men and women with this condition.

Most of the time, a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s meant a death sentence. Drugs offered relief, but they only worked on symptoms, not the cause of the disease. This new drug honed in on deadly plague on the brain by destroying it. This drug, called  aducanumab, is administered monthly for a whole year by infusion. It removed these hurtful toxins found in the brain. Well, if oatmeal removed plaque in the arteries, this drug worked something like that. It stopped the nerve cells from being interrupted by the plaque.

Thankfully, those 36 points might be able to help with the type of foods and what to change in their life to reverse Alzheimer’s Disease without the use of drugs. Only time will tell if these new developmental work with patients suffering from this disease.

Urination at the Kellogg’s plant was disgraceful, unethical and gross

The person responsible for urinating in a Kellogg’s plant assembly line should be prosecuted for health code violations, This video was shot two years ago, but the identity of the one on camera still remained unidentified. Frankly, this Kellog’s employee deserved to be fired and arrested.

At least the Kellogg’s company apologized, being taken aback and appalled over the incident. Apparently, this supposedly affected the cereal, the treats and puffed rice cake products. At least they were expired by now. Thank goodness this blogger did not eat cold cereal. It made me sick to hear and watch this video even though the anchorwoman warned me.

What possessed anyone into doing something so stupid? Why did it take so long for the video to emerge on social media? To me, this was disgraceful, unethical, and downright gross. At least the authorities were looking into filing criminal charges against this person or people responsible. Even though my knowledge of health code violations was lacking,  There were a few in the crime report from the Kellogg’s Tennessee plant, according to one news article.

If they did this to be humorous, they missed the mark on that. People who urinate in alcoholic drinks and carbonated drinks and had people drink them for laughs were not any friend of anyone. Suppose someone got sick from eating the products that had urine in them? It sure made people in the video want to upchuck. It sure made my stomach lurch to see and hear it myself.

This reminded me of the Taco shell eater that posted on Facebook last year. He was wearing the  restaurant uniform and pretending to eat taco shells in the picture. Later they were said to have been expired. Not only did the company apologize in an online statement, that employee was terminated. He deserved it. The Kellogg’s plant worker should be barred from working around food.

Sitting wasn’t the only reason my left quad muscle hurt

A while back, Time Magazine wrote another article on another reason to sit less. With my disability, sitting couldn’t have been helped after being confined to a wheelchair after age 12.

Among the September 15 article’s reasons to sit less other than the development of non fatty alcohol liver disease or NFALD, it caused obesity and insulin resistance for those that drank no alcohol. The sedentary lifestyle also increased the risk of cancer by 66%

After telling my mother about the pain in the quad muscle in my left leg, all she related that to was ‘sitting too much’. What she failed to realize was that the pain was aggravated by crossing my right leg over my left too far, pinching a vein in my back leg to put my stockings and shoes on. The pain almost bought me to tears, but it has been isolated.

There were studies that said it was harmful to cross one’s legs while sitting because:

  1. It reduced blood flow
  2. Increased blood pressure
  3. Weakened the veins
  4. Caused blood clots

Treatment began on Sunday after church. My leg crossing made it easier to place stockings, socks and shoes on, so it wasn’t a long ordeal.

The use of heat

Using heat in the form of a microwavable pad removed the soreness when the muscle tried to  spasm or jerked after being still for long periods and moving to stretch out. This was the body resisting the change which was very painful. Thankfully, with my degree of Spastic Cerebral Palsy, no medication was needed for my jerky muscle movements.

Rubs, and oral medication

After the first few days, rubs and oral medication were only used at night along with the last application of heat. Normally, to combat shoulder pain from climbing into and out of the church van,  required me taking oral medication for my sore shoulder muscles at night anyway. Being asleep helped the medication work better because of my being relaxed. Rubs were an added bonus because the menthol in them were also a great help with motion when getting up to use the bathroom.

Stretching out

One of the few exercises done by me was the morning stretch. It reduced leg shaking and prevented falling as well as wetting accidents. At first, bent legs meant extreme pain when having to switch positions or trying to get up for a potty trip. Trying to get into or out of bed was difficult also because bending the injured leg caused extreme pain after being still a few hours. Rolling onto my stomach and pulling myself across the mattress instead of using a rocking method reduced pain when getting back into bed. pre-stretching my legs getting out reduced pain too.

Even though my being sedentary was dangerous, sitting was not the main reason the quad muscle in my left leg hurt, it was a pinched nerve in my back leg when the right keg was crossed too far. Thanks to my treatment getting into the van after church was hopefully less painful after being still.

The battle against bugs continued: Cleaning house kept people ahead of them

The worst thing that happened to me was having a spider crawl in my ear while in bed asleep. The battle against bugs always occurred. That was a good reason to clean my bedroom from top to bottom and in all the creases, like in the closet and under the bed. This last summer and fall, it was gnats. Somehow, in spite of the netting around my sliding glass door, they still got in. Sometime, my opening the closet where the trash can was kept, revealed a swarm of them waiting to be set free. Mom said they were attracted to the scent or bad odors contained in the trash like unwrapped spoiled food.

My only problem with bugs was finding them alive by the front and back doors, before maintenance sealed them to keep out the draft in winter. The running joke was being able to survive on the bugs still alive in my home if food ran short. My having to toss out a small Dixie cup of live bugs three times a week made me wonder if the mandatory spraying that took place every three months was effective. During a drought, it wasn’t. My stomach turned when seeing a roach crawl across the same counter where dinner was eaten. It made me lose my appetite.

Recently, my acquisition of a new mattress and box spring had me wondering about my old bedding. This blogger didn’t blame the delivery men for not removing any unsanitary bedding, which included the ones that had vermin in them. The workmen put gloves on when handling my mattress. The worst thing that happened to my sister was her mattress had bugs in it. She had bites on both legs. Mine made me itch. Not cleaning the bed linens lead to head and body lice, which led to Adult Protective Services getting involved.

Having animals in the house made cleaning a top priority with fleas, ticks and other microscopic things like ear mites. One of the dogs my mother has now had ear mites, just like two from the past. One of the male dogs had ear mites so bad that his ear stank. Mom had to clean them at least once or twice a week. As a puppy, his odor was so bad that he had to be bathed once a week because he stepped in a lot of the rancid stuff outside.

Most of the germs people found were in the bathroom. Using an ultraviolet light showed people where the hidden dirt remained. The toilet was the worst because everyone used it. In some cases, the floor was the second worst. Some people missed the target. Other communal things were computer keyboards, television and stereo remotes and telephones. People sneeze or cough and pick up these things without washing their hands. Door knobs and counters were another germy place everyone used.

There were things one could do to stay one step above the bugs.

  1. Take out the trash more often, especially after throwing out expired food from the fridge or freezer.
  2. Make a daily cleaning schedule and stick to it. Cleaning the kitchen and the bathroom once a week kept it free of bugs.
  3. Change the bed linens at least every two weeks. Blankets and bedspreads could be washed twice a year with daylight savings time.
  4. Spray the mattress and vacuum to kill any irritant. This included the futon, too.
  5. Wipe down table surfaces and counters after every use.

By doing this, no one had to worry about bugs or any type of infestation. The scent made the house smell nice too.
